INFO for Test 1 on Crowdmark

At noon on Thursday Oct 28, you will receive an email from Crowdmark with a link to the test. Once you click on the button “Start the assessment now” you will have exactly 70min in which to do the problems (50 minutes), scan them to PDF, and upload them to Crowdmark (20 minutes.) (SAS students excepted.) The test will be available from noon until 3pm, so if you start at 2pm, you will only have until 3pm to finish. Late submissions will be penalized per minute past the deadline.

SAS students: contact me if the time period does not work with your accomodations.

Test #1: Crowdmark

We will be using Crowdmark for the Tests. You will receive shortly an e-mail with a Mock assignment, so that you practice using Crowdmark. The idea is for you to log in to Crowdmark, create a password, and to go through the process of seeing what an evaluation looks like and how you are to submit your solutions. In particular, you will need to use a good scan app to upload: a phone picture is not good enough as it is too difficult to read. Here is some info about Crowdmark.

Once you have created your account, you will be able to see the Mock assignment. You can do this Mock assignment anytime until midnight on Tuesday, but once you start and look at it, you will have 30 min to submit your answers. Again this is a Mock assignment, coming from the practice problems, so it is NOT graded. This is for you to practice using Crowdmark before the 50 min Test on Thursday Oct 28th at 13:30.

Test #1: Material

The material for the Test #1 is everything we have covered in class until the complex case in Thursday’s lecture, so up to and including the degenerate nodes. See the “Plan”. You should be comfortable with the material covered in class, the practice problems and the Kritik assignments. It is VERY important that you do the practice problems as the Kritik assignements are only covering a small portion of the content of the class.

Hi Everyone,

Are you considering graduate school in math, statistics, mathematical finance, or computational science and engineering? Are you wondering if you *should* be considering graduate school?  Are you just curious about graduate school?

Please join us for Undergraduate Information Night on Thursday, October 21st, 2021 5 – 6:10 pm.

Here are some questions we will discuss:

  • Why should (or shouldn’t) I go to graduate school?
  • What is a graduate degree good for?
  • How should I decide what schools to apply to?
  • What will increase my chances of acceptance?
  • What should I expect in graduate school?
  • Is there financial support?
  • What programs are available at McMaster?

Kritik 2: part D

Your part D were evaluated by Pip. He did a great and extensive job at giving you useful comments to help you improve on future assignments, as well as to prepare for the midterm. Unfortunately there was a big discrepancy between his evaluation and that of your peers. I encourage you to go through the comments that were given by Pip before evaluating your peers for Kritik 3 and make sure that you read the posted solutions carefully to prepare better for the midterm.

Kritik 2, due Thursday Oct 7th at 11pm

The last sentence of part (D) of Kritik 2 has been simplified: I only ask for the extension of the solution, and nothing about uniqueness. Please take a look at the new version of the assignment on Kritik. I have given an extension for Kritik 2 until tomorrow 11pm (Thursday Oct 7th, 11pm)

When grading part (D), only grade up to and including the extension of the solution, i.e. do not grade the last part about the unique extension.

BTW, this last part of (D) is a very good question: you should decide whether the extention in this problem is unique or not, and what does this means in terms of the condition that f be C^1 for uniqueness.

Next semester I will be teaching a topics in analysis class which only requires Math 3IA3 and which is rarely offered. The topics will be Distribution Theory and Fourier analysis: they are fascinating topics that were introduced at the beginning of last century and which you can approach by just combining your previous knowledge of calculus and analysis.

The class needs at least 8 pre-registered students not to be cancelled. Here is the syllabus with more info: feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Group chat

I have posted on the group chat a question and an answer about Kritik 2 part (C). The group chat is an excellent way to exchange questions and answers, and Pip and I will be looking at it from time to time, so we recommand to use it.
